Jim Perdue challenges researchers to broaden base

Jim Perdue, chairman of Perdue Farms, challenged researchers attending the International Poultry Scientific Forum (IPSF) to broaden the research base to include processing, food safety, poultry welfare and environmental stewardship.

Research can’t be driven solely by the pursuit of publication, he told a large crowd of researchers. There is a growing opportunity and importance for university research, he said.

Perdue also said more collaboration between researchers and industry is needed. This should include industry representation on papers and an ongoing relationship between the lab and the field. Industry also needs to be more open and available to researchers.

What’s more, industry needs to be able to reference objective, third-party research, he said. The IPSF concluded today with the keynote speech by Perdue.

The conference is held in conjunction with the International Poultry Expo and International Feed Expo, which opens tomorrow and runs through Friday.

I have the pleasure of working for Jim and his Dad Frank for a total of 20 years. I live in a region with three other poultry companies in the area, and Perdue Farms has always held strong no matter the economic environment. Not only is he a fine, well educated person, but personable as well. He makes us all proud.
